Over the Garden Wall

Over the Garden Wall is an animated miniseries from Cartoon Network, blending dark fantasy with Americana. Created by Patrick McHale, it was the network’s first miniseries. The story follows two half-brothers, Wirt and Greg, as they navigate a strange forest called the Unknown, trying to get home. Along the way, they meet odd and fantastical beings. The show grew out of McHale’s short film *Tome of the Unknown*, made for Cartoon Network Studios’ shorts program. The main characters are voiced by Elijah Wood (Wirt), Collin Dean (Greg), and Melanie Lynskey (Beatrice, a bluebird). The cast also includes Christopher Lloyd, Tim Curry, Bebe Neuwirth, Chris Isaak, Shirley Jones, Thomas Lennon, Jack Jones, Jerron Paxton, John Cleese, and Samuel Ramey. The Blasting Company created the soundtrack. The series aired from November 3 to November 7, 2014.

McHale first thought of the idea in 2004 and pitched it to the network in 2006. After working on shows like *The Marvelous Misadventures of Flapjack* and *Adventure Time*, the network asked him to pitch a pilot. That pilot, *Tome of the Unknown*, led to *Over the Garden Wall*. Production started in March 2014, mostly in Burbank, California, though many artists worked from other U.S. cities. Animation was outsourced to South Korea’s Digital eMation. The show’s look draws on 19th- and 20th-century Americana, with digital backgrounds styled like brunaille paintings.

Critics praised the series for its atmosphere and characters. In 2015, it won an Emmy for Outstanding Animated Program. A one-shot comic book adaptation by McHale was released, followed by four more issues. This grew into an ongoing comic series of 20 issues, plus graphic novels and miniseries. A three-minute stop-motion short by Aardman Animations came out on November 3, 2024, for the 10th anniversary, bringing back McHale, Wood, and Lynskey.

The plot follows Wirt and Greg, who get lost in the Unknown. They travel through it with help from the Woodsman (Christopher Lloyd) and Beatrice, a bluebird who wants to find Adelaide, who can supposedly lift a curse on her family and guide the boys home. Wirt is a nervous teenager who keeps to himself, playing clarinet and writing poetry in secret. Greg is younger, carefree, and carries a frog he tries to name—a running joke.
