Enemy (Imagine Dragons and JID song)

Lead single from the Arcane soundtrack and opening theme.

"Enemy" is a collaboration between American pop rock band Imagine Dragons and American rapper JID. Released on October 28, 2021, through Interscope Records and Kidinakorner, it served as the lead single from the soundtrack to the Netflix animated series Arcane and also functions as the show's opening theme. The track appears on Imagine Dragons' fifth studio album Mercury – Act 1 and its reissue Mercury – Acts 1 & 2.

The song was written by the artists along with Justin Tranter and producers Mattman & Robin. It marked JID's first top-five hit in the US and the band's first since "Thunder" in 2017. In 2023, Billboard ranked "Enemy" as the 14th-most successful song in the history of the Alternative Airplay chart, where it spent 54 weeks, nine of them at number one.

The track was recorded for Arcane, which premiered on November 6, 2021, and was inspired by the video game League of Legends. The band had previously recorded "Warriors" for the 2014 League of Legends World Championship. On Instagram, JID noted that he wrote his verse a couple of years prior, and that the opening lines originally came from a song he started with Mac Miller, who suggested they would fit better on this track.

An opening title version—featuring a more orchestrated instrumental and slightly longer runtime—was released on November 23, 2024, as the closing track of the album Arcane League of Legends: Season 2 (Soundtrack from the Animated Series).

In a press release, vocalist Dan Reynolds described "Enemy" as being about reconciling internal conflict in a world where trusting even yourself feels impossible. He linked the song to the series, where two sisters' divergent paths create a division that threatens an entire city, calling the track both personal and a critique of a society that seems to encourage division.

An animated music video, produced by Riot Games and Fortiche Production, was released alongside the song. It follows the League of Legends character Jinx, depicting parts of her childhood that led her to a life of crime and the falling out between her and her sister Vi.

Personnel credits from Tidal list Mattman & Robin as producers, composers, lyricists, and performers handling bass, brass band, drums, guitar, programming, synthesizer, and background vocals. Justin Tranter contributed as a composer, lyricist, and background vocalist.

Reader's Guide

"Enemy" became JID's first song to reach the top 5 in the US, and Imagine Dragons' first top 5 since their 2017 song "Thunder".
