In Their Own Story
The BMO Stadium lights hummed their low electric hum as the seventh minute ticked over. The ball was played long, a lazy diagonal that most wingers would have let die on the turf. Bouanga did not. He was already moving, shoulders squared, eyes locked on the full-back who had the luxury of a two-yard cushion. The cushion evaporated. One step, two steps, and the full-back was already turning, already losing the race before it had a finish. The ball was controlled on the chest, the stride lengthened, and for three seconds the only sound was the slap of studs on the BMO pitch and the collective gasp of the south stand. The cross came in high, the header was off-target, but nobody in the stadium cared. The replay was already being shouted for. The message was delivered: you do not sit back against this one. You do not sit back.
