KalPa was established in 1929 as Sortavalan Palloseura in Sortavala, but relocated to Kuopio in 1945 after its original hometown was annexed by the Soviet Union. During its Sortavala years, the club did not play ice hockey, instead competing in association football, bandy, and pesäpallo. Ice hockey was introduced in 1947, and in 1956 KalPa officially replaced the local club KuPS in that sport, specializing in hockey while continuing minor league football until 1974 as a farm team for KuPS.

The club's modern era is shaped by NHL alumni ownership: Sami Kapanen controls 50.5% of KalPa Hockey Oy, Kimmo Timonen owns 8%, and Scott Hartnell owns 5% after purchasing a minority share following financial advice from Timonen during a road trip to Boston. During the 2004–05 NHL lockout, Timonen, Kapanen, and Adam Hall played for KalPa, winning the Mestis championship and returning to SM-liiga for the 2005–06 season after relegation in 1999.

KalPa has won four Liiga medals: gold in 2024–25, silver in 1990–91 and 2016–17, and bronze in 2008–09. The club also won the Spengler Cup in 2018. Its honored members include Pasi Kuivalainen, Sami Kapanen, Jouni Rinne, Eero Kilpeläinen, and Kimmo Timonen.
