Skellefteå AIK was founded on 1 July 1921 at Café Norden in Skellefteå, but ice hockey was not played until 1943, with only training matches the first season. The club played in the local league Skellefteserien in 1943–44, which could not be finished due to unsuitable outdoor hockey weather. In 1955, Skellefteå qualified for the highest league in Sweden, and in the 1957–58 season they finished second in SM-serien, one point behind Djurgårdens IF. The club was one of the teams participating when the Swedish Elite League (Elitserien) was formed in 1975. In 1977–78, Martin Karlsson led the league in goals and points, and Hardy Nilsson was the most penalized player; Skellefteå won the playoffs to become Swedish champions in 1978. In 1985, the hockey organization split from the mother club and competed as Skellefteå HC until 1991, when it retook the Skellefteå AIK name. The club was relegated in 1990 and spent 16 seasons in the second league (Allsvenskan) before qualifying again for the top tier, playing in Elitserien since 2006–07.

Agostino's four seasons with the Yale Bulldogs remain one of the most compelling chapters of his career. Arriving as a freshman in 2010, he made an instant mark, becoming only the third first-year player in school history to record a hat-trick on January 2, 2011, adding two assists to tie the freshman single-game points record with five in a 10–3 rout of Holy Cross. His production climbed steadily each year—25 points as a freshman, 34 as a sophomore, and a career-high 41 as a junior in 37 games. As a young player, he represented the New Jersey Devils minor program at the 2005 Quebec International Pee-Wee Hockey Tournament, a rite of passage for elite junior prospects. His high school career at Delbarton School was nothing short of historic: he graduated as the school's all-time leading scorer with 261 points and was named New Jersey High School Player of the Year by the Newark Star-Ledger in both 2009 and 2010. His senior campaign of 2009–10 produced 50 goals and 83 points, a statistical feat that earned him a fifth-round selection (140th overall) by the Pittsburgh Penguins at the 2010 NHL entry draft.
