IK Oskarshamn was founded on 27 May 1970 through the merger of the ice hockey sections of Oskarshamns AIK and IFK Oskarshamn. Initially called AIK–IFK Oskarshamn, it became IK70 for the 1972–73 season and finally IK Oskarshamn for the 1986–87 season. The team thrice reached the final qualification stage for the highest league, in 2000–01, 2004–05, and 2018–19, when it was promoted for the first time.

The club plays its home games at Be-Ge Hockey Center, built in November 1974 and renovated during the 2004–05 season. In the 2000–01 and 2004–05 Kvalserien, the team finished 5th and 6th respectively. In 2010–11, it finished 9th, six points from pre-qualification. In 2011–12 and 2012–13, it reached the playoff round. Notable acquisitions in 1992 included Skeeter Moore and Peter Ekroth, who helped the team climb from Division 3 to Division 1 (HockeyAllsvenskan) in three seasons.
