Porin Ässät was established in June 1967 when Rosenlewin Urheilijät-38 and Porin Karhut merged their sports operations. The merger was negotiated secretly, with Rosenlew taking over part of Karhut's debts and promising financial support. The club's name was given by Vilho Santala, and the logo was designed by Vesa Antikainen. Early tensions arose between players from the former clubs, and the first team consisted mainly of Karhut players. Ässät won the Suomen Cup in 1967 before its first SM-sarja season, beating SaPKo 7–0 in the final.

In its first season (1967–68), Ässät placed fourth under coach Rauli Virtanen. The club's first championship came in 1970–71, led by forward Veli-Pekka Ketola, who returned from Jokerit and was the top point scorer. Ässät joined the SM-liiga as an original team in 1975–76, winning bronze that season.
