Background and release
Lucas first appeared as a member of NCT in 2018, then joined the Chinese sub-unit WayV and put out the single album The Vision in 2019. That same year, he became a member of the K-pop supergroup SuperM. In August 2021, he paused his activities due to personal controversies, and in May 2023 his label SM Entertainment confirmed he would leave NCT and WayV to work as a solo artist. Early in 2024, Lucas released a two-part documentary called Freeze where he addressed those controversies, and he set up new social media accounts ahead of his solo projects.
On March 8, 2024, JTBC News reported that Lucas would debut as a soloist in April, and SM Entertainment confirmed this later that day. Three days after that, SM announced the single album Renegade, which includes three English-language tracks with a title song of the same name, set for release on April 1. Renegade came out on April 1, 2024, alongside its lead single and two music videos: "Plan A," which shows Lucas performing the song at a press conference before turning into a mouse, and "Plan B," a choreography-heavy video of him performing on an airport runway.
