Lore & Background

The game placed an emphasis on the use of a smartphone mobile app for motion detection, and introduced a subscription-based service offering streaming access to a back catalogue of songs from previous entries, as well as additional exclusive content. Standard gameplay was re-organized under 'Dance Party' mode, encompassing competitive and cooperative multiplayer. 'Dance Quests' mode lets players compete against a computer opponent across three randomly selected songs. Eighth-generation console versions include 'Showtime', allowing players to record short lip sync music videos. The Wii, PS3, and Xbox 360 versions are based on Just Dance 2015, with online features returning. All online services were discontinued for Wii, PS3, and Xbox 360 on November 19, 2018, and for all other platforms on July 3, 2023.

In Their Own Story

The neon lights of the virtual stage flicker as the opening beat drops. A group of Just Dancers, glowing with energy, strike a synchronized pose in the center of a kaleidoscopic arena. The air vibrates with anticipation; there is no script here, only the rhythm. As the music swells, the dancers move fluidly, their movements perfectly timed to the bassline, inviting the player to join the endless celebration of sound and motion.

Reader's Guide

Players select a song and follow the motions of on-screen dancers. The game supports motion controller accessories (Kinect on Xbox 360 and One, PlayStation Camera on PS4, PlayStation Move on PS3 and PS4, and Wii Remotes on Wii and Wii U) or a smartphone app for motion tracking. In co-op mode, players earn jewels as a team, with up to 10 jewels for a four, five, or six person team. Players can send recordings of performances alongside challenges to others. The 'Community Remix' feature was revamped with player videos added into the background of original choreography, excluding 'Uptown Funk', in full screen format on eighth-generation consoles, while windowed format is used on Wii, PS3, and Xbox 360. Mashups use remade versions of routines from the first three main games, first shown in Just Dance Now. All songs feature pre-rendered backgrounds instead of in-game backgrounds, excluding on-disc Mashups.
