Carmen Aristegui is a Mexican journalist and news anchor, counted among the country's most prominent reporters and opinion voices. Her reputation rests on critical investigations into the Mexican government. She anchors the program Aristegui on CNN en Español, contributes opinion columns to the newspaper Reforma, and runs her own news website with an online morning newscast that also airs on Grupo Radio Centro's XERC-FM. In March 2015 she was unlawfully dismissed from MVS Radio 102.5 FM after her team reported on conflicts of interest involving President Enrique Peña Nieto and a state contractor tied to a luxury family residence.
Lore & Background
María del Carmen Aristegui Flores was born on 18 January 1964 in Mexico City, the fifth of seven children. Her father was a Basque Spaniard who came to Mexico as a child refugee after the Spanish Civil War; her mother had Spanish and French roots, and she credits that family history for her choice of career. She grew up in Colonia Álamos in the Benito Juárez borough, took her first job at 17 with the accounting firm Ayala and Associates, and studied at UNAM, moving from sociology to communication sciences. Her television start came at Imevisión as an assistant on Monitor Financiero, and she soon became a fixture of its morning news alongside Javier Solórzano.
