Brian Douglas Williams is an American broadcast journalist best known as the anchor and managing editor of NBC Nightly News, a post he held from December 2004. He had been reporting for the broadcast since 1993. In 2015 his standing collapsed when NBC News found he had misrepresented events from his Iraq War coverage; he was suspended, taken off the evening newscast, and shifted to breaking news duty on MSNBC. He rebuilt his profile as host of The 11th Hour from September 2016, then left MSNBC and NBC News together in December 2021 when his contract ran out.

Lore & Background

Born in Ridgewood, New Jersey, on May 5, 1959, Williams was raised in a boisterous Catholic household and was the last of four siblings. His father, Gordon Lewis Williams, was an executive vice president of the National Retail Merchants Association.

After nine years in Elmira, New York, the family settled in Middletown Township, New Jersey, where he attended Mater Dei High School and fought fires as a volunteer. College stints at three schools ended without a degree, though he did intern at the White House press office during the Carter years. Local television came first: KOAM-TV in Kansas in 1981, then stations in Washington, Philadelphia and New York.
