Background
Cash auditioned for Sun Records in 1955 as a gospel singer but failed to impress founder Sam Phillips, who believed gospel would not sell. Cash returned with "Hey Porter!" and "Cry! Cry! Cry!," which became his debut single in July 1955, backed by Luther Perkins on guitar and Marshall Grant on bass, dubbed "The Tennessee Two." "Cry! Cry! Cry!" reached #14 on the country charts. His second single, "Folsom Prison Blues," released in December 1955, reached the country Top Five in early 1956. "I Walk the Line" hit number one on the country charts for six weeks and crossed into the pop Top 20.
Track listing
On the Varèse CD reissue, "Country Boy" is an acoustic demo version with just Cash and his guitar, not the original full-band version from the LP; the full-band version is available on iTunes. "Country Boy" was re-recorded for his 1996 album Unchained. The 2012 box set Johnny Cash: The Complete Columbia Album Collection includes an extended edition with additional tracks. In October 2020, Zia Record Exchange reissued the album on clear orange vinyl as a limited run of 500 copies.
