Lore & Background
The story is original but borrows from Fleming's Moonraker and The Man with the Golden Gun and from Kingsley Amis's Colonel Sun. Made for the franchise's 40th anniversary, it nods to every earlier film. Critics praised Tamahori's direction but faulted the heavy CGI, product placement, plot and villain; it still grossed about $432 million, the sixth-highest total of 2002. Casino Royale (2006) then rebooted the series with Daniel Craig.
