Sabina (oil)

Extra virgin olive oil from the ancient Sabine territory.

The Sabina region, spanning parts of Rome and Rieti provinces, produces an extra virgin olive oil that holds a Protected Designation of Origin (PDO). This designation was the first granted in Italy, arriving before similar statuses for Aprutino Pescarese, Brisighella, Collina di Brindisi, and Canino.

Production area: Sabina

The production area of Sabina PDO extra virgin olive oil lies mainly in the provinces of Rieti and Rome, following the borders of the ancient Sabine territory. Production techniques remain nearly the same as in pre-Roman times, with necessary technological innovations. The soil and mild climate are fundamental for the oil. Municipalities in the province of Rieti include Cantalupo in Sabina, Casaprota, Casperia, Castelnuovo di Farfa, Collevecchio, Configni, Cottanello, Fara Sabina, Forano, Frasso Sabino, Magliano Sabina, Mompeo, Montasola, Montebuono, Monteleone Sabino, Montenero Sabino, Montopoli in Sabina, Poggio Catino, Poggio Mirteto, Poggio Moiano, Poggio Nativo, Poggio San Lorenzo, Roccantica, Salisano, Scandriglia, Selci, Stimigliano, Tarano, Toffia, Torricella, Torri in Sabina, and Vacone.

In the province of Rome: Guidonia Montecelio, Fonte Nuova, Marcellina, Mentana, Monteflavio, Montelibretti, Monterotondo, Montorio Romano, Moricone, Nerola, Palombara Sabina, Sant'Angelo Romano, San Polo dei Cavalieri (località Caprareccia and territory not exceeding 475 metres altitude), and part of north-east Rome.

La strada dell'olio Sabina

La Strada dell'olio e dei prodotti tipici della Sabina was created within the project to promote Italian typical agro-food products for tourism. It is part of the cultural-promotional activity of the Città dell'Olio, an association linked to ANCI (Associazione Nazionale Comuni Italiani), aimed at unifying municipal and provincial activities to build easily recognisable tourist routes. The route inaugurated in part of the Sabina territory with the opening of an oil museum and events related to olive pressing and harvesting, such as frantoi aperti del Lazio, although signs with the stylised olive are not prominently present across all of Sabina. Oil production in Sabina has ancient roots, certainly pre-Roman and presumably even earlier.
