Name
The name "See the Elephant" derives from an American figure of speech originating in the 19th century. The phrase meant to go out into the world to see something with one's own eyes and experience life firsthand. It became popular during the American Civil War, the California Gold Rush, and the Westward Expansion Trails. The expression traces back to 1796, when Jacob Crowninshield displayed an Asian elephant at the corner of Beaver and Broadway in New York City, the first live elephant exhibit in the Americas. Visitors traveled from as far as Virginia, the Carolinas, and Pennsylvania to see the elephant, making the phrase a claim of worldly experience.
