Annurca
Old Southern Italian apple with PGI status and sun-ripening process.
Annurca is an old apple cultivar from Southern Italy, possibly the one mentioned by Pliny the Elder and Gian Battista della Porta. It is cultivated mainly at the border between Caserta and Benevento provinces, in a valley called the 'queen of apples'. The apple does not ripen on the tree but turns red after being placed in the sun. It has Protected Geographical Indication status as 'PGI Melannurca' and is listed on the Ark of Taste.
