Story
The Winx Club girls return to Gardenia on Earth, working as talent scouts on a reality television program to find talented children and teenagers. Behind the scenes, they try to save them from a Talent Thief while hiding their identities as fairies. In the first season, they achieve a new magical transformation called Dreamix. In the second season, the Winx receive missions from the spirit of the World of Dreams, learn of the Queen's troubled past, and hope to reunite her with Peter Pan. Their Dreamix powers upgrade to Onyrix. They face shadow creatures called Nemesis drawn from each fairy's deepest uncertainties.
Characters
The series features the six main fairies from the original Winx Club series. Bloom is the Fairy of the Dragon Flame and leader of the Winx Club, from the restored planet Domino but raised on Earth; she has red-orange waist-length hair and light blue eyes, controls fire, heat, and lava, and can heal. Stella is the Fairy of the Shining Sun from Solaria, with waist-length blonde hair and hazel brown eyes; her magic derives from light, and in season 2 she can look into memories made in a location. Flora is the Fairy of Nature from Lynphea, with waist-length honey-colored hair, green eyes, and tan skin; she creates, controls, and communicates with plants. Tecna is the Fairy of Technology from Zenith, with short purple hair, turquoise eyes, and pale skin; she speaks to machinery and electronics and controls lightning. Musa is the Fairy of Music from Melody, with waist-length dark blue hair with bangs, dark eyes, and pale skin; she creates ultrasonic waves and solid barriers of sound. Aisha is the Fairy of Waves from Andros, with wavy tawny port brown hair, gray-blue eyes, and dark skin; she manipulates water and a pink liquid called Morphix.
Production
Netflix commissioned two seasons of World of Winx from Rainbow in September 2014, with each season containing thirteen 22-minute episodes. The series follows the girls on a secret global mission to find gifted children in art, sports, music, and science. Originally scheduled for early 2016, the show was pushed back and debuted on November 4 as a Netflix original. Season two arrived on June 16, 2017. The show was canceled after two seasons, leaving the story hanging on a cliffhanger.
Reception
Ella Anders, a regular reviewer of magical girl-themed shows on BSC Kids, had low expectations given that more recent Winx Club seasons were shells of their original, but found World of Winx surprisingly good. She liked that the story was meaningful, tightly woven, and that the humour and heart shone. She noted the girls used their magic wisely and creatively, and were back to their old selves.
