Cnidaria
Aquatic invertebrates with stinging cells and a decentralized nerve net.
Cnidaria is a phylum of more than 11,000 species of aquatic invertebrates, mostly marine but also found in freshwater. They include jellyfish, hydroids, sea anemones, corals, and some of the tiniest marine parasites. What sets them apart is a decentralized nerve net spread through a gelatinous body and the presence of cnidocytes—specialized cells that shoot out harpoon-like structures, mainly to sting and capture prey. Their bodies are built from a non-living, jelly-like layer called mesoglea, sandwiched between two layers of epithelium, each usually just one cell thick. Many cnidarians can reproduce both sexually and asexually.
Most cnidarians take one of two basic body forms: swimming medusae or sessile polyps, both radially symmetrical with a single opening that serves as both mouth and anus, surrounded by tentacles armed with cnidocytes. Some species form colonies composed of medusa-like or polyp-like zooids, or a mix of both. Their activities are coordinated by a decentralized nerve net and simple receptors; some also possess rhopalia for gravity sensing and, in certain cases, chemoreception. Free-swimming cubozoans and scyphozoans may have statocysts for balance, and a few have simple eyes. Life cycles often alternate between asexual polyp stages and sexual medusae stages, though some species omit one or the other, and parasitic classes have lost both forms entirely.
Cnidarians were once grouped with ctenophores (comb jellies) in the phylum Coelenterata, but differences led to their separation. The phylum is now divided into four main groups: the mostly sessile Anthozoa (sea anemones, corals, sea pens); swimming Scyphozoa (jellyfish); Cubozoa (box jellies); and Hydrozoa, a diverse group including all freshwater cnidarians and both sessile and colonial swimmers like the Portuguese man o' war. Staurozoa is now recognized as a separate class, and the parasitic Myxozoa and Polypodiozoa were confirmed as cnidarians only in 2007. Most cnidarians prey on plankton to animals larger than themselves, though many rely on symbiotic dinoflagellates, and a few are parasites.
