Saffron

Only in October, after most other plants have released their seeds, do its brightly colored flowers develop, ranging from light lilac to darker, striated mauve. The flowers have a sweet, honey-like fragrance. When flowering, the plants stand 20–30 cm (8–12 in) tall and bear up to four flowers. From each flower emerges a three-pronged style 25–30 mm (1–1+3⁄16 in) long, each prong ending in a vivid crimson stigma, the distal end of a carpel.

The saffron crocus, unknown in the wild, probably descends from *Crocus cartwrightianus*. It is a triploid that is self-incompatible and male sterile, undergoing aberrant meiosis and thus incapable of independent sexual reproduction.
