Jerk were formed in 1998 in Sydney as an industrial goth rock band by vocalist Michael Matral, drummer Lamar Lowder, guitarist Johnathan Devoy, and bass player Ross Empson. They contributed the track "Jesus Saves" to the Mushroom Records soundtrack for the Australian horror film Cut in 2000. In June 2000, the line-up changed with Devoy moving to lead vocals, joined by guitarist Charles Cilia and bassist Leeno Dee. In 2001, Jerk released a self-titled six-track extended play with three accompanying music videos directed by Lowder, leading to an appearance at the Metal for the Brain festival in Canberra. In April 2002, they signed to Sony Records.

Origins & Sonic Vision

Pain began not as a conventional band but as a personal creative outlet for Swedish musician Peter Tägtgren. His central idea was to merge the raw aggression of heavy metal with the pulsing, machine-driven aesthetics of 1980s electro-industrial and techno, giving the project a distinctly electronic edge that set it apart from typical metal acts. Tägtgren, who simultaneously serves as vocalist and guitarist for the metal band Hypocrisy and operates his own The Abyss recording studio, remains the sole current member. The project's self-titled debut album arrived in 1997, establishing the blueprint for everything that followed. Rather than functioning as a traditional group with rotating personnel, Pain operates as a one-man creative engine, with Tägtgren handling the core musical direction while collaborators such as drummer David Wallin and bassist Johan Husgafvel have joined for live performances and recordings over the years.

Chart Success & Label Transitions

Following the 1997 debut, Pain went on to release eight additional studio albums and a DVD, building a substantial catalog over nearly three decades. A notable milestone came with the second album, which marked the beginning of a consistent run of charting entries in Sweden. This sustained domestic success was driven in significant part by standout singles including "End of the Line," "Shut Your Mouth," and "Same Old Song," which broadened the project's audience beyond purely underground metal circles. On the label front, Pain experienced a notable shift: in early February 2006, the music news outlet Blabbermouth.net reported that the project had signed with Roadrunner Records. However, Pain's current home is Nuclear Blast Records, the label through which later releases, including the 2011 album You Only Live Twice and the 2016 record Coming Home, were distributed to listeners worldwide.

The Leipzig Assault

One of the most harrowing episodes in Pain's history occurred in 2008 during a supporting tour for Finnish symphonic power metal band Nightwish. While on the road, Tägtgren, drummer David Wallin, and bassist Johan Husgafvel were attacked by a gang in Leipzig, Germany. The violence left all three members seriously injured: Tägtgren required ten stitches to his face, Wallin suffered a concussion along with stitches to his head, and Husgafvel had his nose broken. The incident stands as a stark reminder of the physical dangers musicians can face while touring. Despite this traumatic event, Pain continued their work, and in 2009 they returned to support Nightwish again, this time on the second half of the Dark Passion Play World Tour alongside Finnish pop rock band Indica, with the first show taking place in London on 11 March 2009.

From the self-titled 1997 debut to the ninth studio album I Am, released on 17 May 2024, Pain has demonstrated remarkable longevity and consistent output. Over roughly 27 years, Tägtgren has delivered nine full-length records, a DVD, and a catalog of singles and music videos that collectively map the evolution of his electro-metal fusion. The discography includes notable entries such as the seventh album You Only Live Twice (3 June 2011) and the eighth, Coming Home (9 September 2016), both issued through Nuclear Blast.
