Lore & Background

Sonic Speed Simulator was pitched by Joe Ferencz, CEO of Gamefam, to Ivo Gerscovich, Sega's chief brand officer for Sonic the Hedgehog. Ferencz sought to develop an official Roblox game for a major franchise, leveraging the anticipated popularity boost from the 2020 Sonic the Hedgehog film. Gerscovich saw it as an opportunity to connect the Sonic brand with Roblox's young playerbase. The game was announced and released in closed beta on April 13, 2022, requiring 50 Robux for access, before becoming free-to-play on April 16, 2022.

Gameplay involves collecting Chaos Orbs and rings to gain XP, level up, and increase speed and jumping power. Players can rebirth to reset their stats but earn Skill Points for permanent upgrades. Characters from the Sonic franchise can be unlocked through quests, events, and codes. Trails and pets provide upgradeable benefits and can be fused into evolved forms. The game features worlds unlocked via Gate Keys earned from quests.

In December 2022, allegations from ex-employees about crunch, underpaying, and layoffs led to the hashtag #SonicSweatshopSimulator on Twitter. Gamefam denied the allegations and banned users from the game's Discord server who mentioned the issues. Despite this, the game continued to grow, reaching 500 million visits in its first four months and one billion visits by August 2023.

Reader's Guide

Sonic Speed Simulator holds significance as a landmark example of a major video game franchise successfully integrating into the Roblox ecosystem. Its launch was Roblox's largest at the time, with 70 million plays and 275,000 concurrent players in its first week. The game's achievement of one billion visits in August 2024 demonstrated the enduring appeal of the Sonic brand among younger audiences and the viability of branded experiences on user-generated platforms. The game also sparked controversy regarding labor practices at Gamefam, highlighting tensions between rapid development and worker treatment in the gaming industry. Its reception was mixed: praised for polished 3D open-world gameplay but criticized for unsatisfying progression and basic race minigames. The game's legacy includes influencing how major franchises approach Roblox as a marketing and engagement platform, as well as raising questions about ethical development practices in the creator economy.
