Peter Karmanos Jr.

Hockey Hall of Fame builder and former Hurricanes owner.

Last updated

Peter Karmanos Jr. is an American businessman and hockey executive who served as principal owner of the Carolina Hurricanes (formerly the Hartford Whalers) from 1994 to 2018 and remained a minority owner until 2021. He also owned the Plymouth Whalers junior team from 1990 to 2015 and the Florida Everblades from 1998 to 2019. Karmanos was inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame in the Builder Category in 2015.

Background

Karmanos co-founded the Detroit Compuware Hockey organization in the late 1970s, which grew to include youth, AAA, and junior A levels. In 1989, the Ontario Hockey League awarded an expansion franchise to the group, initially called the Detroit Compuware Ambassadors, later renamed the Detroit Junior Red Wings, Detroit Whalers, and finally the Plymouth Whalers after a move to Plymouth. Karmanos sold the Whalers in 2015, and the franchise became the Flint Firebirds.

In 1994, Karmanos, his Compuware partner Thomas Thewes, and former player Jim Rutherford purchased the Hartford Whalers for $47.5 million, committing to keep the team in Hartford for at least four years. After low season-ticket sales, Karmanos announced the team would leave if 11,000 season tickets were not sold for the 1996–97 season. Although that threshold was met, the team moved to Raleigh, North Carolina, after the 1996–97 season and was renamed the Carolina Hurricanes. The Hurricanes reached the Stanley Cup Finals in 2002 and won the Stanley Cup in 2006, with Karmanos skating with the Cup after the final game.
