Tarikh
Arabic term for history, chronology, and historiography.
Tarikh (تاريخ) is an Arabic word for date, chronology, era, and by extension annals, history, and historiography. It appears in Persian, Urdu, Bengali, and Turkic languages and is found in the titles of many historical works. The word first appears in 8th-century titles and became standard for such works by the 9th century. Its etymology is uncertain; medieval Arabic philologists proposed a derivation from Persian māh-rōz, while modern lexicographers suggest an unattested Old South Arabian etymon.
