Life and work
His first film work was as an extra in The Changeling (1980), for which he was paid $10.[3] He made his film debut in the starring role of Paul Atreides in Dune (1984) after a casting agent received multiple recommendations for him.[4] MacLachlan played Special Agent Dale Cooper in the ABC television series Twin Peaks (1990–91) and reprised the role in Lynch's 1992 prequel film Twin Peaks: Fire Walk with Me.[5] He appeared as musician Ray Manzarek in Oliver Stone's 1991 film The Doors.[6]
From 2000 to 2002, he had a recurring role in Sex and the City as Dr. Trey MacDougal.[7] In 1982, MacLachlan earned a BFA in drama from the University of Washington, graduating cum laude.[8] Following the poor reception of Dune, MacLachlan relocated to Los Angeles in 1985 and tried out for multiple film roles without success.[9] For the 1986 film Blue Velvet, Lynch selected MacLachlan to play the lead character Jeffrey Beaumont.[10]
Starting in 2006, MacLachlan portrayed Orson Hodge on Desperate Housewives, joining the main cast when the third season began.[11] For the limited series Twin Peaks: The Return, which premiered on May 21, 2017, MacLachlan again played Special Agent Dale Cooper.[12]
What the cited sources add
A 2000 Guardian profile notes that MacLachlan's screen presence is founded on a two-way tension, and that Blue Velvet's Jeffrey Beaumont is a boy "frightened by his fascinations"[13] The same source reports that Lynch said MacLachlan can "play naive and innocent and obsessive" and that "Kyle can think on-screen"[13] A 2012 A.V. Club interview states that MacLachlan acknowledges how much of his career he owes to his collaborations with David Lynch.[14]
