Coy Luther "Luke" Perry III (October 11, 1966 – March 4, 2019) was an American actor who rose to fame as a teen idol for his portrayal of the brooding millionaire’s son Dylan McKay on the Fox television series *Beverly Hills, 90210*. He played the role from 1990 to 1995 and again from 1998 to 2000. Born in Mansfield, Ohio, and raised in Fredericktown, Ohio, Perry was the second of three children. His parents divorced when he was six, and his father, a steelworker, died of a heart attack in 1980. After high school, Perry moved to Los Angeles in 1984 to pursue acting, working odd jobs such as paving asphalt and laboring in a doorknob factory. He auditioned for 256 roles before landing his first acting job in 1988. His earliest television appearances were on the daytime soap operas *Loving* and *Another World*. Perry originally auditioned for the role of Steve Sanders on *90210* but lost to Ian Ziering; instead, he was cast as Dylan McKay. The role made him a massive teen idol; a riot broke out when 10,000 teenage girls attended an autograph session in Florida in 1991, forcing him to leave after 90 seconds. While on *90210*, he appeared in the original film *Buffy the Vampire Slayer* (1992) and starred as Lane Frost in *8 Seconds* (1994). He left the series in 1995 seeking more mature roles, but returned in 1998 as a permanent special guest star through the show’s final season in 2000. During his hiatus, he appeared in the independent film *Normal Life*, the television film *Invasion*, and had a small role in Luc Besson’s *The Fifth Element* (1997). Later, he starred as Reverend Jeremiah Cloutier on HBO’s *Oz* and in the post-apocalyptic series *Jeremiah*. He also guest-starred on shows such as *Spin City*, *Will & Grace*, and *The Simpsons*, and voiced Rick Jones in *The Incredible Hulk* (1996–1997). In his later career, Perry played Fred Andrews on the CW series *Riverdale*. His final feature film performance was in Quentin Tarantino’s *Once Upon a Time in Hollywood* (2019), for which he received a posthumous Screen Actors Guild Award nomination. Perry died of a stroke on March 4, 2019, at age 52.
