Luke Perry

American actor known for Dylan McKay and Fred Andrews.

On October 11, 1966, in Mansfield, Ohio, Coy Luther Perry III was born as the middle child of three to homemaker Ann Perry and steelworker Coy Luther Perry Jr.[1][2] His breakout role as Dylan McKay on Fox's Beverly Hills, 90210 began in 1990 and made him a teen idol.[2]

Life and work

After his parents divorced in 1972, Perry was raised by his mother and stepfather in Fredericktown, Ohio.[2] He moved to Los Angeles in 1984 after high school, working odd jobs including for an asphalt paving company.[3][4] He landed the role of Dylan McKay on Beverly Hills, 90210 in 1990, having originally auditioned for the part of Steve Sanders.[5][2] From 2001 to 2002, he starred as Reverend Jeremiah Cloutier on the HBO prison drama Oz.[6][7]

Before landing his first acting job in 1988, Perry had gone through 256 auditions.[8] At a 1991 autograph event held in August at The Fashion Mall at Plantation, a crowd of 10,000 teenage girls caused a disturbance that forced Perry to leave after only 90 seconds.[5] Seeking more mature parts, Perry departed Beverly Hills, 90210 in 1995; he later came back as a permanent special guest star from 1998 until the series ended in 2000.[9][10] Perry portrayed Fred Andrews on The CW's Riverdale from 2017 up to the time of his death in 2019.[11]

At his Sherman Oaks residence on February 27, 2019, Perry experienced a severe ischemic stroke and passed away on March 4 at the age of 52.[12][2]

The Biography.com account states that Perry’s stepfather, construction worker Steve Bennett, was the role model Perry looked to.[2] The same source notes that Perry lacked enthusiasm for his high school’s farming curriculum.[2] A 2019 news report says that Perry’s mother told People magazine that “If Fredericktown ever had a ladies’ man, it was Luke.”.[4] The All Movie entry for Riot (1997) confirms that film is about the 1992 Los Angeles riots sparked by the beating of Rodney King.[13]

The Biography.com account reports that Perry turned down the chance to star in a spin-off of Beverly Hills, 90210 in 2008.[2] The same source says that Perry made his Broadway debut in 2002 in The Rocky Horror Picture Show.[2]
