Jack Lemmon was an American actor born on February 8, 1925, who died on June 27, 2001.[1] He won two Academy Awards and was known for both comic and dramatic roles.[1][2]

Life and work

He was the only child of a wealthy Boston family and attended exclusive prep schools.[3][4] Lemmon served as a communications officer in the United States Navy during World War II.[5] His film debut was a bit part in The Lady Takes a Sailor (1949).[6] Lemmon won the Best Supporting Actor Oscar for his role in Mister Roberts (1955).[7][2]

He collaborated with director Billy Wilder on seven films, beginning with Some Like It Hot (1959).[8] Lemmon won the Best Actor Oscar for Save the Tiger (1973).[1][2] He had a long-running collaboration with actor Walter Matthau spanning ten films.[9][10] Lemmon died of bladder cancer at age 76 on June 27, 2001.[11]

Lemmon's birth took place in an elevator at Newton-Wellesley Hospital in Newton, Massachusetts, as confirmed by multiple sources including a Guardian obituary and a New York Times article.[3][2] Following his Harvard graduation, Lemmon received acting instruction from Uta Hagen at HB Studio in New York City.[5]

The Guardian obituary notes Lemmon was born in a lift because his mother insisted on staying at a bridge table.[2][12] The same source reports Lemmon gave up alcohol in the early 1980s and was a recovering alcoholic.[2][13] The Ability Magazine interview confirms Lemmon served as on-air host for the TV series The Living Century.[4] News24 reports that Ving Rhames gave his Golden Globe award to Lemmon in 1998.[14]
