American actor and two-time Academy Award winner

Life and work

He studied drama at the Juilliard School between 1979 and 1981 but did not graduate.^[4] His first professional stage appearance was as a spear carrier in Henry VI, Part 1 in 1981.^[5] He gained prominence for his role as Verbal Kint in The Usual Suspects (1995), winning the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor.^[6] He became artistic director of the Old Vic theatre in London in February 2003.^[7]

Spacey was a student at Northridge Military Academy and later attended Canoga Park High School for the 10th and 11th grades, before finishing as co-valedictorian of Chatsworth High School's 1977 graduating class.^[8] For his performance as Uncle Louie in Neil Simon's Broadway production Lost in Yonkers, Spacey received a Tony Award in 1991.^[9] In 1999, Spacey portrayed Lester Burnham in Sam Mendes's film American Beauty, a role that earned him his second Academy Award.^[10] Spacey played Frank Underwood in the Netflix political drama House of Cards from 2013 to 2017, a performance that won him a Golden Globe Award.^[11]

Multiple allegations of sexual misconduct were made against Spacey in 2017.^[12]

The Television Academy notes that Spacey served as executive producer and star of House of Cards.^[13] Cerasaro's article reports that in 1984 Spacey appeared in each of the four main roles in David Rabe's Hurlyburly.^[14] The same source notes that Spacey's voice work in A Bug's Life made him known to younger generations.^[14] Emami's article for HuffPost describes Spacey's run as Richard III at the Brooklyn Academy of Music in 2012.^[15]
