Shaquille O'Neal is an American former professional basketball player who is a sports analyst on Inside the NBA.^[1] He played as a 7 ft 1 in, 325 lb center for six teams over 19 NBA seasons.^[1]

Life and work

Shaquille Rashaun O'Neal was born on March 6, 1972, in Newark, New Jersey.^[2] O'Neal's stepfather, Phillip Arthur Harrison, was a career Army sergeant.^[3] O'Neal studied business at Louisiana State University after graduating high school in 1989.^[4] He won NBA Rookie of the Year in 1992–93.^[5]

He played for the Phoenix Suns, Cleveland Cavaliers, and Boston Celtics before retiring.^[5] Orlando made O'Neal the top selection in the 1992 NBA draft.^[5]

A Bleacher Report analysis states that before Orlando drafted O'Neal, the team was 21-61, and with him they improved to 41-41.^[6] The same source notes that in O'Neal's first year with the Lakers, the team was 38-13 in games he played and 18-13 without him.^[6] The Bleacher Report article also states that during O'Neal's three-peat, the Lakers had a 12-11 record when he was injured.^[6] The NBA's official website lists O'Neal among the 50 Greatest Players in NBA History, announced on Oct. 29, 1996.^[7]
