André-Marie Ampère

Founder of electrodynamics and namesake of the ampere

André-Marie Ampère was born on 20 January 1775 in Lyon to a prosperous businessman and his wife, and he spent his childhood at the family property in Poleymieux-au-Mont-d'Or, which now houses a museum dedicated to his life and the history of electricity. His father, an admirer of Jean-Jacques Rousseau, educated Ampère according to Rousseau’s theories, allowing him to learn directly from nature rather than through formal schooling. This meant Ampère educated himself within his father’s well-stocked library, using works such as Buffon’s *Histoire naturelle* and Diderot and d’Alembert’s *Encyclopédie* as his teachers. He soon resumed Latin lessons, which enabled him to master the works of Euler and Bernoulli, and by age twelve he was teaching himself advanced mathematics. Ampère later claimed that by eighteen he knew as much mathematics and science as he ever would, though his reading also encompassed history, poetry, philosophy, and the natural sciences. His mother was a devout Catholic, and he was initiated into that faith alongside Enlightenment science. The French Revolution deeply affected him: his father became a local judge under the revolutionary government but resisted the Jacobin faction and was guillotined in 1793. In 1796 Ampère met Julie Carron, marrying her in 1799, and their son Jean-Jacques was born the following year. Ampère’s first regular job, as a mathematics teacher in 1799, provided the financial security for this marriage. In 1802 he was appointed professor of physics and chemistry at Bourg-en-Bresse, where he researched mathematics and produced a treatise on probability. After his wife’s death in 1803, he moved to Paris, tutoring at the École Polytechnique and becoming a professor of mathematics there in 1809. He later taught philosophy and astronomy at the University of Paris and was elected to the chair of experimental physics at the Collège de France in 1824. In 1814 he joined the class of mathematicians in the new Institut Impérial. A lay Catholic, he once took the young student Frédéric Ozanam into his family.
