R. Buckminster Fuller was an American architect, systems theorist, writer, designer, inventor, philosopher, and futurist. He published over 30 books and introduced terms like "Spaceship Earth," "Dymaxion" (applied to a house, car, and map), "ephemeralization," "synergetics," and "tensegrity." His most famous invention is the geodesic dome, and the carbon molecules called fullerenes were named after him due to their structural similarity to these domes. He also served as the second World President of Mensa International from 1974 to 1983.
Fuller held 28 U.S. patents and received many honorary doctorates. His honors include the Frank P. Brown Medal (1960), election to Phi Beta Kappa (1967), a fellowship in the American Academy of Arts and Sciences (1968), and membership in the National Academy of Design (associate in 1968, full academician in 1970). In 1970, he received the Gold Medal from the American Institute of Architects and was named a Master Architect by Alpha Rho Chi. He won the St. Louis Literary Award in 1976 and the Golden Plate Award from the American Academy of Achievement in 1977. President Ronald Reagan awarded him the Presidential Medal of Freedom on February 23, 1983.
Born July 12, 1895, in Milton, Massachusetts, Fuller was the son of a prosperous merchant. He was a grand-nephew of Margaret Fuller, a journalist and women's rights advocate. The middle name "Buckminster" was a family name. As a child, he experimented with different signatures, eventually settling on R. Buckminster Fuller. He spent much of his youth on Bear Island, Maine, attended Froebelian Kindergarten, and disliked how geometry was taught—rejecting the idea of an empty point or an infinite line, which later influenced his work on synergetics. He built things from found materials and invented a push-pull rowboat propulsion system using an inverted umbrella. He later objected to the term "invention" for his work. He earned a machinist's certification and learned to use sheet metal tools.
Fuller attended Milton Academy and then Harvard, where he was expelled twice: first for partying with a vaudeville troupe, then for irresponsibility. He considered himself a non-conforming misfit. Between Harvard sessions, he worked as a mechanic in a Canadian textile mill and as a laborer in meatpacking. During World War I, he served in the U.S. Navy as a radio operator, editor, and commander of the crash rescue boat USS Inca. After the war, he returned to meatpacking management. He married Anne Hewlett in 1917, and in the early 1920s, he and his father-in-law created the Stockade Building System for lightweight, fireproof housing, though the company failed in 1927.
The year 1927 was pivotal. His daughter Alexandra had died in 1922 from polio and spinal meningitis just before her fourth birthday. Fuller suspected her death was linked to their damp, drafty home, which motivated his work on affordable housing. That year, he lost his job at Stockade, had no savings, and his daughter Allegra was born, adding financial strain. He drank heavily and took long walks around Chicago, contemplating suicide by drowning in Lake Michigan so his family could collect life insurance.
