He became Earl of Warwick jure uxoris in 1449 after his wife's niece died.[1] His historical legacy has been a matter of much dispute, with opinions alternating between seeing him as self-centred and rash.[2]

Life and work

He became a knight by 1445, probably at Margaret of Anjou's coronation on 30 May that year.[3] In March 1454, York was appointed protector of the realm, with Warwick and his father Salisbury supporting him.[4] Warwick was appointed Constable of Calais, which provided him with a vital power base.[5] His position after Edward's accession was stronger than ever, with an annual income from lands of over £7,000.[6]

Edward's secret marriage to Elizabeth Woodville in 1464 caused great offence to Warwick.[7] Warwick orchestrated a rebellion in 1469, captured King Edward, but was forced to release him.[8] After a failed plot in 1470, Warwick fled to France and allied with Margaret of Anjou to restore Henry VI.[9] In 1436, when he was eight years old, Richard married Lady Anne Beauchamp, which positioned him to inherit extensive lands.[10]

At the Battle of Wakefield on 30 December, York was killed, and subsequently Warwick was defeated at the Second Battle of St Albans.[11][12]
