Life and work

After failing to pass examinations for the Certificate of Administrative Law, he took a job as a history teacher in Hanoi.[3][4] Giáp was commander of the army during the 1968 Tet Offensive and 1972 Easter Offensive.[5] He died in a Hanoi hospital at 6.30pm local time on 4 October 2013.[6] Giáp's birthplace was Quảng Bình province, where he came from a well-off peasant family; his anti-colonial activism started in 1925.[7]

During World War II, Giáp became a key figure as the military head of the Việt Minh, which fought against Japanese occupation.[7]

What the cited sources add

The Guardian obituary describes Giáp as a self-taught soldier who became one of the foremost military commanders of the 20th century.[8] RFI reports that Giáp beat the French at the historic battle of Dien Bien Phu and died at age 102.[6] The Independent notes that Giáp was born in 1911 in a village of Quang Binh, one of the poorest provinces in central Vietnam.[2] The Tuổi Trẻ article states that Giáp married Đặng Bích Hà in late 1946 after his first wife died.[9]

That same source confirms that Giáp and Đặng Bích Hà had four children: Võ Hòa Bình, Võ Hạnh Phúc, Võ Điện Biên, and Võ Hồng Nam.[9]
