Life and work

Dewey attended Norwich University for two years from 1852 to 1854, where he found a military role model in Hannibal.[2] After the war, Dewey served as an instructor at the Naval Academy from 1868 to 1870.[2] During the second engagement at Fort Fisher, Dewey's tactical decision silenced a battery in fifteen minutes, which led to commendation from Admiral Porter.[2] Departing from China in 1898, Dewey launched an attack on Spanish forces at Manila Bay, resulting in the sinking or capture of the entire Spanish Pacific Squadron.[3]

What the cited sources add

Lawrence's work records that Thomas E. Dewey, who served as New York's Governor, was Dewey's third cousin twice removed.[4] On August 17, 1858, the Wabash made its initial port stop at Gibraltar, as described in the biography.[2] Lawrence notes that Dewey was given the responsibility of maintaining the ship's log during that voyage.[2] The biography states that Dewey received a promotion to lieutenant commander following the Fort Fisher battles.[2]
