Life and work
Page was born on March 26, 1973, in Lansing, Michigan, to a father who earned a PhD in computer science and a mother who was an instructor in computer programming.[2][3] His father brought home an Exidy Sorcerer computer when Page was six years old, which he soon mastered.[4] At Stanford, Page met fellow graduate student Sergey Brin and recruited him to join his research project on web backlinks.[5] Together they wrote the paper "The Anatomy of a Large-Scale Hypertextual Web Search Engine," which became one of the most downloaded scientific documents in Internet history.[5]
Page and Brin incorporated Google as a privately held company in 1998 and relocated their servers to a friend's garage in Menlo Park, California.[5] Page was chief executive officer of Google from 1997 until August 2001, when he was succeeded by Eric Schmidt.[6] He became CEO again in April 2011 and later CEO of Alphabet Inc. until December 4, 2019, when he stepped down from all executive positions.[6] In 1995, Page earned a Bachelor of Science in Engineering with a computer engineering major from the University of Michigan, and three years later he completed a Master of Science in computer science at Stanford University.[7]
