Jerry Yang

While studying at Stanford in 1994, Yang and Filo co-created an Internet website called "Jerry and David's Guide to the World Wide Web."[1] Yang first encountered David Filo at Stanford in 1989, and together they participated in a six-month exchange program in Japan starting in 1992.[2] Yang ceased being CEO in 2009, and in January 2012 he departed from the company and resigned from its board.[3][4]

A 1996 MetroActive article reported that Yang and Filo each held 17.3 percent of Yahoo! shares, expected to be worth up to $60 million apiece.[5] The same article noted that Yang and Filo created their directory to fight boredom and avoid working on their theses.[5] A 2014 Fortune article stated that many shareholders blamed Yang for bungling negotiations with Microsoft over a $44 billion takeover attempt.[6] Yang's 18-month tenure as CEO ended in 2009 with shareholders unhappy about his inability to turn the company around.[6]
The Fortune article identified Yang as the architect of the $1 billion Alibaba investment, and Eric Jackson of Ironfire Capital called it "the best investment an American company has ever made in China."[6]
