Life and work

Sluter's name appears in the Brussels stonemasons' register around 1379/1380.[2] He moved to Dijon and became assistant to court sculptor Jean de Marville from 1385 to 1389.[2] The portal includes a Madonna and Child, the duke with St. John, and the duchess with St. Catherine.[3] Sluter did the main work on Philip's tomb, now in the Museum of Fine Arts in Dijon.[3]

Between 1395 and 1403, Sluter created the Well of Moses, his most renowned piece.[4] Philip the Bold established the Carthusian monastery of Champmol in 1383, and the Well of Moses was made for that location.[4] The cross and its terrace were lost sometime after 1736 but before 1789, likely because a roof fell in.[4]
