Rating Game

Sanctioned devil matches played with chess-piece positions.

Rating Games are the sanctioned combat matches between devils in High School DxD. The characters hold positions akin to chess pieces, and Issei, Rias and the Occult Research Club take part in them alongside contracts with humans and other conflicts around the school. A pawn such as Issei can be promoted to use the abilities of higher-ranked pieces by reaching an opponent's headquarters during a game or with the King's permission.

Background

Rias loses her Rating Game against Riser Phoenix before Issei defeats him at the engagement party; in one storyline Ravel resigns her own game against Riser to save him. Ravel's mother does not play Rating Games and traded one of her unused bishop pieces to Riser for her. Azazel was created as a coach who does not take part in the games, and Sona Sitri uses a "technique" strategy that counters the power-type strategies Rias favours.
