The Sorting Ceremony
How new students are placed in their houses.
When first-year students arrive at Hogwarts, the magical Sorting Hat is placed on their heads to place them in a house. The Hat puts Harry in Gryffindor, Draco Malfoy instantly in Slytherin, and, a generation earlier, Snape in Slytherin and Lily in Gryffindor. The Hat is one of Godric Gryffindor's relics, together with the Sword of Gryffindor that Harry later draws from it.
