Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone is J. K. Rowling's debut novel and the first book of the Harry Potter series, published on 26 June 1997. It follows Harry, a young wizard who learns of his magical heritage, meets the half-giant Hagrid, who gives him his letter to Hogwarts, and is sorted into Gryffindor. At school he finds the Mirror of Erised, the final protection of the Philosopher's Stone, which Quirrell tries and fails to take from it. The film adaptation opened in London on 14 November 2001.
