Core Drill Key
The drill that pierces the heavens.
The Core Drill is a drill-shaped key that Simon unearths in Giha village. It is a small, handheld object that serves as the activation mechanism for the Gunmen Lagann, which Simon uses to break through to the surface world. Later, Simon uses his Core Drill to activate Lagann and combine it with Gurren to form Gurren Lagann, defeating Lordgenome with a drill attack while still in the mecha—though Lordgenome is killed, his spirit appears multiple times as a recurring ally, including during the battle against the Anti-Spirals and in the epilogue. The Core Drill is also passed on by Simon to Gimmy at the end of the series, symbolizing the continuation of his legacy.

Lore & Background
The Core Drill is first discovered by Simon, a meek young digger, while expanding his home deeper underground. It is a drill-shaped key that he uses to activate the small Gunmen he finds, which Kamina names Lagann. The Lagann's drilling-based abilities allow Simon to destroy a giant Gunmen attacking Giha village and break through the ceiling to the surface world. Twenty years after the team defeats the Anti-Spirals, Simon hands his Core Drill over to Gimmy and leaves his friends, stating that his destiny was merely to 'dig the tunnel to the future.'
Frequently Asked Questions
How does the Core Drill function in battle?
Primarily acting as the activation mechanism for Lagann, it also functions as a powerful melee weapon when Simon wields it directly against Lordgenome. Its ability to pierce through defenses is tied to the user's Spiral Energy and determination.
Does the Core Drill have any connection to Spiral Power?
Yes, the artifact is intrinsically linked to Spiral Energy, which fuels its ability to awaken Lagann and amplify Simon's combat capabilities. It acts as a conduit that channels this cosmic power into tangible action against enemies like Lordgenome.
