Underground Civilization
Hidden in darkness for a millennium, waiting for the spark that would bring them back to the light.
The Underground Civilization refers to the scattered communities of humanity living in vast caverns beneath the Earth's surface. These people are forced into this subterranean existence by the Beastmen, who rule the surface and hunt humans. The plot of Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann begins in one such village, Giha, where Simon and Kamina live. The villagers have no knowledge of the surface world beyond terrifying stories, and their society is built around survival and fear of the unknown. It is within these dark tunnels that Simon discovers Lagann during a dig, setting in motion the events that will challenge the Beastmen's rule and lead humanity back to the surface.
Lore & Background
The Underground Civilization consists of isolated human communities living beneath the Earth's surface, hiding from the Beastmen who hunt them. The people of Giha Village, where Simon and Kamina are from, live in constant fear of earthquakes and the surface world. Simon's parents died in a cave-in, and he is a valued digger despite being physically underdeveloped. Kamina dreams of reaching the surface, which he believes he saw as a child with his father. The village chief enforces strict rules against disrupting peace, jailing Kamina for attempting to break through the roof. The villagers have no knowledge of the sky or stars, treating such ideas as myths or dangerous fables. Their technology is limited to basic mining tools and machinery, with no understanding of Gunmen or Spiral Power until Simon unearths Lagann.
Reader's Guide
The primary goal of the Underground Civilization is simple survival: to remain hidden from the Beastmen and continue their daily lives in the caverns. There is no unified government; instead, society is fragmented into independent villages like Giha, each led by local elders who enforce strict rules against surface exploration. Key figures include Simon, a young miner whose discovery of Lagann changes everything, and Kamina, the charismatic leader who challenges the status quo.
The ideology of these people is defined by fear and conformity; they believe that venturing above ground guarantees death. This mindset serves the Beastmen's agenda perfectly, keeping humanity docile and divided. In the conflict, the Underground acts as the starting point for the rebellion. While most villagers are initially terrified to leave their homes, a small group of pioneers breaks free from these mental shackles.
Their journey transforms them from fearful survivors into warriors who reclaim their heritage, proving that humanity's true home is not in the dark, but under the open sky.
