Background and composition

Work on Revolution Radio began in 2014 after the 99 Revolutions Tour supporting ¡Uno!, ¡Dos!, and ¡Tré! (2012). Billie Joe Armstrong acknowledged that the trilogy had "absolutely no direction to them" and was an attempt at being "prolific for the sake of it". He described the record as "not so much a makeover as a make under". The lead single "Bang Bang" is about "the culture of mass shooting that happens in America mixed with narcissistic social media."

"Bang Bang" premiered on August 11, 2016, followed by the title track and "Still Breathing" on September 9 and September 23, respectively. Lyric videos for "Youngblood", "Ordinary World", "Say Goodbye", "Troubled Times", and "Too Dumb to Die" were released at various dates. A music video for "Still Breathing" appeared on November 7, and an official video for "Youngblood" was released on December 13, 2018. The final track "Ordinary World" was featured in the 2016 film of the same name starring Armstrong.

Critical reception

Revolution Radio received positive reviews from music critics. On Metacritic, the album holds an average score of 72 out of 100 based on 29 reviews, indicating "generally favorable reviews". Aaron Burgess of Alternative Press wrote that it is the first time in years Green Day haven't had all the answers, but as a statement on fighting it is the closest to the truth they have gotten. Gwilym Mumford of The Guardian noted that after their last few albums the band decided to get back to basics, calling Revolution Radio their most focused work in years.
