Lee Kirk conceived Ordinary World after having his first child in 2011, wishing to explore how parenthood can change a person. He met Billie Joe Armstrong through the latter's talent agent, and the two developed the story over nine months. Armstrong contributed four songs to the film, including 'Ordinary World,' which later appeared on Green Day's album Revolution Radio. Principal photography occurred in New York City, starting in late 2014 and lasting three weeks. Armstrong insisted that music be performed live, leading to the casting of Fred Armisen, Lucas Papaelias, and Kevin Corrigan as his bandmates due to their musical abilities. Joan Jett made a cameo appearance, arranged by Armstrong via text message.
