Background

Green Day performed at Woodstock on the South Stage on August 14, 1994, six months after the release of their major-label debut Dookie. The set became one of the festival's most memorable moments, featuring a mud fight with fans. Drummer Tré Cool described it as a set that changed their lives. Before the official reissue, the performance circulated through bootlegs and video recordings. The band announced the vinyl release on Instagram on March 1, 2019.

Album cover

Billie Joe Armstrong created the album cover. It uses the same image from the 1994 album Dookie, but with duct tape over the cover, splattered with mud and handwritten additions. The band name above the mushroom cloud is covered by tape reading 'Green Day Live!'. The monkey on the bottom left wears sunglasses, four missiles say 'Never Trust a Hippy', and the word 'Dookie' is taped over with 'Woodstock 1994'.

Notes on performance

Woodstock '94 was also called Mudstock due to rainy weather creating mud pits. During Green Day's set, the crowd threw mud at the stage, hitting Billie Joe Armstrong, who then started a mud fight during 'Paper Lanterns'. Bassist Mike Dirnt was mistaken for a fan jumping on stage and was tackled by a security guard, knocking out a tooth and requiring emergency orthodontia. A gag order was placed regarding the incident. The performance helped propel Dookie to success.
