Insomniac (Green Day album)
Heavier, darker follow-up to Green Day's breakthrough Dookie.
Insomniac is the fourth studio album from American rock band Green Day, released on October 10, 1995, through Reprise Records. The band recorded it at Hyde Street in San Francisco, focusing on high-energy takes during the sessions. As the follow-up to their multi-platinum breakthrough Dookie, the album has a heavier sound and more bleak lyrics, touching on alienation, anxiety, boredom, and drug use.
Critics generally gave the album positive reviews, highlighting Billie Joe Armstrong’s songwriting and sarcastic humor. Four singles came from it: "Geek Stink Breath," "Stuck with Me," "Brain Stew / Jaded," and "Walking Contradiction." It hit number 2 on the Billboard 200 and went 2× Platinum in the U.S. by 1996, but it didn’t have the same sales endurance as Dookie, largely because of its darker tone and more abrasive sound. As of 2012, Insomniac had sold over 2.1 million copies in the United States. The album was reissued on vinyl on May 12, 2009, and a deluxe 25th-anniversary edition came out in 2021, adding previously unreleased live tracks.
By the time they recorded Insomniac, Dookie was nearing ten million sales, and the band’s success had led to rejection from the punk circles where they started. They were playing large venues like coliseums and hockey arenas. Armstrong felt stung by accusations of selling out, saying he was lost and couldn’t convince himself he was doing the right thing, especially since it felt like he was making many people angry. This disorientation pushed the band to prove themselves with the album. Bassist Mike Dirnt recalled a strong urgency to stake their claim and show they weren’t a flash in the pan. Meanwhile, the members’ personal lives changed: Armstrong got married and had a son, and drummer Tré Cool and his wife had a daughter. Armstrong found these milestones surreal and struggled to process them, preferring to keep working and writing songs rather than stopping to reflect.
Much of the album was written and rehearsed in a small Cape Cod-style house in East Oakland, California. The band covered the walls with notes under song titles, jokingly giving instructions for the intended tempo, like “Must pop Valium for this one” and “Must take crank for this one.” After Cool’s child was born, he said he could hit the drums harder than ever, as having a kid was trying but enhanced his band experience.
