The first season of Gravity Falls aired on Disney Channel from June 15, 2012, to August 2, 2013, and has 20 episodes. It introduces the twins Dipper and Mabel, sent to their Grunkle Stan's Mystery Shack, and the book Dipper finds that changes their summer.

Hirsch grew up on The Simpsons, which showed him that animation could be funnier than live action and need not be only for kids, and he aimed for a show both children and adults would enjoy. Before Gravity Falls he wrote and storyboarded on The Marvelous Misadventures of Flapjack alongside Pendleton Ward and helped develop Disney's Fish Hooks.
