Lumine
The interstellar traveler who searches for a lost sibling across Teyvat's seven elements without needing a Vision.
Lumine is one of two possible protagonists in Genshin Impact, serving as the younger sister to Aether. Players choose between them at the start, with developers confirming both are identical in gameplay and story, meaning there is no single "canon" version. As an interstellar traveler from outside Teyvat (a Descender), she can manipulate elemental power without a Vision. She travels alongside her guide Paimon across Teyvat's nations to find her lost sibling while navigating political conflicts and the conspiracies of the Abyss Order.

Lore & Background
Lumine awakens five hundred years after being separated from her brother by the "Sustainer of Heavenly Principles," also known as the Unknown God. Unlike native residents, she possesses no Vision yet wields multiple elements as she progresses through the story. Her journey takes her to Mondstadt, where she helps repel the dragon Stormterror and purify Dvalin from Abyss Order corruption. She later discovers her sibling leads the Abyss Order, a major antagonistic faction opposing the Heavenly Principles.
Traveling to Liyue, she meets Zhongli during the Rite of Descension, which ends with the Geo Archon seemingly assassinated. Suspected alongside Paimon, she aids Zhongli in preparing the Rite of Parting and eventually defeats the ancient god Osial summoned by Tartaglia. Investigations with Dainsleif lead to further encounters with her sibling, who urges the Traveler to continue across Teyvat.
Reader's Guide
Lumine serves as the player's embodiment in Teyvat, functioning as a silent protagonist with very limited dialogue to allow for self-insertion. While classified as a five-star character, her combat strength is evaluated as relatively low and she can often be replaced by other characters of the same element. Her unique mechanic allows her to unlock and use each element without a Vision. Players cannot obtain copies of Lumine via the gacha system, nor does their custom name affect story development. In-game, most characters refer to her by title (e.g., "Honorary Knight" in Mondstadt or "Tumaini" in Natlan) rather than her real name. Her outfit changes dynamically based on the element she resonates with; for instance, Anemo resonance causes a pale blue glow.
Origins and Core Abilities
Lumine debuted when Genshin Impact launched in September 2020, having first appeared in the beta trailer in June 2019. Players choose her or Aether at the start; while Aether appears more frequently in promotional materials, developers state there is no "official" version. She lacks a Vision and cannot be obtained through gacha. Her name and birthday are set by the player. Uniquely, she can use multiple elements as the story progresses, and her outfit changes to reflect her current element.
Narrative Tension and Characterization
Lumine's characterization balances being an independent character with serving as a vehicle for player self-insertion. Her personality is conveyed mostly through actions due to limited dialogue, sparking discussion about her role as a silent protagonist. Despite this, the emotional storyline between her and her sibling is regarded as a deeply developed narrative force. In combat, she is a five-star character but considered relatively weak compared to others of the same element.
Gameplay Mechanics and Design Philosophy
miHoYo created distinct attack animations for Lumine; her attack speed is slightly slower than Aether's. Her Constellation names and icons differ from Aether's, though effects are identical. In version "Luna IV" released in January 2026, the team introduced a new outfit with enhancement effects obtainable after completing specific quests.
Voice Acting Perspectives and Emotional Depth
Lumine is voiced by Sarah Miller-Crews (English), Yanning (Chinese), Aoi Yūki (Japanese), and Lee Sae-ah (Korean). Aoi Yūki highlighted Lumine's duality: a "gorilla" side versus a spoiled younger sister around Aether. She attributed Lumine's sense of justice to watching her brother's back during travels. Yanning described building the character like a jigsaw puzzle, noting that in the "Bedtime Story" quest, Lumine acts more naturally without outsiders present.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is Lumine always the active main character?

Who accompanies Lumine on her journey?
She travels alongside Paimon, who acts as her guide and constant companion throughout the exploration of different regions. Their bond is central to the gameplay experience, with Paimon often providing exposition and dialogue support.
