Zhongli

The Geo Archon who faked his death to retire as a mortal consultant for the Wangsheng Funeral Parlor.

Zhongli serves as a consultant for the Wangsheng Funeral Parlor in the fictional nation of Liyue, where he assists with funeral arrangements and demonstrates deep knowledge of rites. Beneath this mortal guise lies his true identity: Morax, the Geo Archon and former ruler of Liyue, one of the seven deities governing Teyvat. He first appeared as a non-player character in the game's main storyline during its 2020 release, specifically in the first chapter. Later that year, he transitioned to a playable status, debuting in version 1.1 on November 11, 2020, alongside his dedicated weapon, the "Vortex Vanquisher." His character arc explores the balance between divine duty and human experience.

Lore & Background

Zhongli orchestrated a profound shift in Liyue's history by feigning his own death during the "Rite of Descension." As Morax, he had ruled for centuries, but sought to test if humanity could govern itself without divine intervention. By surrendering his Gnosis to the ruler of Snezhnaya as part of a deal and stepping back into obscurity, he allowed the Liyue Qixing to assume full authority. The successful subduing of the ancient sea monster Osial by the combined forces of the adepti, Qixing, and security forces proved that Liyue no longer required a god's direct rule. Consequently, Zhongli remained in Liyue as an employee of the Wangsheng Funeral Parlor, observing his people with a quiet satisfaction while navigating mortal life without personal funds.

Reader's Guide

Zhongli is a five-star Geo polearm user whose gameplay centers on protection and crowd control. His elemental abilities allow him to summon a stone stele that deals area-of-effect damage; a longer hold creates a Jade Shield, which reduces the resistances of nearby targets while protecting allies. His Elemental Burst summons a massive meteor from the sky, inflicting Geo damage and petrifying afflicted opponents. Initially released in version 1.1 on December 1, 2020, Zhongli faced widespread criticism for weak combat performance upon launch. However, following significant design revisions by the developers, his reception improved markedly to become favorable. His kit effectively combines defensive utility with offensive capability, making him a versatile choice for various team compositions.

The Dual Identity of Morax

Zhongli is officially described as an employee of the Wangsheng Funeral Parlor responsible for assisting in funeral preparations. Despite possessing no money of his own, he spends lavishly on daily expenses, frequently charging costs to either the parlor or his friend Tartaglia. This behavior frustrates the parlor's director, Hu Tao, and Tartaglia alike. During the main storyline, Zhongli helps the Traveler organize the "Rite of Parting" for Morax. It is later revealed that Zhongli is actually Morax himself, who faked his death to transfer authority to Liyue's people. He also discloses a deal with the ruler of Snezhnaya wherein he surrendered his Gnosis.

Visual Synthesis of East and West

Zhongli features dark brown hair with an orange gradient and striking golden eyes. His costume merges the elegance of a Western tuxedo with a traditional Chinese changpao, creating a dynamic fusion that avoids being obtrusive or hermetic. The coat is decorated with patterns of loong scales and fenghuang feathers, alongside auspicious Fangsheng patterns from the Han dynasty era composed of overlapping rhombus horns. Silver-gray Chinese knotting adorns the outfit, which primarily uses black and brown to convey stability and solemnity. The back of his suit displays bright colors and a reworked Fangsheng pattern, while an anagram at the waist implies "wealth and nobility." Some theorists suggest his name derives from Zhongli Quan, one of the Eight Immortals of Taoism.

Performance Evolution and Critical Reception

Critics have praised Zhongli's portrayal for its composure and dignity. However, upon his initial release as a playable character in version 1.1 on December 1, 2020, he received widespread criticism for weak combat performance. He only gained favorable reception after developers significantly revised his design. As a five-star Geo polearm user, he can summon a stone stele and create a Jade Shield to reduce resistances and deal damage. His Elemental Burst summons a falling meteor that deals Geo damage and petrifies opponents.

Cultural Legacy and Collaborative Impact

On December 18, 2023, Genshin Impact released the promotional teaser "Gazing Up at Eternity, Looking Down at the World" in collaboration with the Sanxingdui Museum. This campaign included the video "Antiquities Experience" and the interactive page "Ancient Treasures Unearthed," themed around Zhongli's dream of perusing Sanxingdui bronzes. As of February 4, 2026, this teaser had surpassed 2 million views on Bilibili. A bronze statue of Zhongli was also displayed at the museum for visitors. Studies have noted his design blends Chinese and Western cultures, with some comparing him to Fuxi from ancient texts. Voice actor Tomoaki Maeno noted that while early concepts portrayed him as serious, details like forgetting his wallet revealed a more carefree side.
