Kait Diaz

From Outsider rebel to COG corporal: the granddaughter of Queen Myrrah who chose to save humanity.

Kait Diaz is a fictional character in the Gears of War franchise, first appearing as a supporting character in Gears of War 4 before becoming the main protagonist of Gears 5. Originally a member of the Outsiders, a faction of rebel human settlers living outside Coalition of Ordered Governments (COG) city-states, she later enlisted with the COG armed forces, attaining the rank of corporal. Voiced by Laura Bailey in all appearances, Kait is recognized as the franchise's first lead female character. While Gears of War 4 was originally centered on J.D. Fenix as the protagonist, with Kait in a supporting role, the narrative shifted to focus on her arc in Gears 5, showcasing a strong female lead with nuanced characterization and a deep backstory.

Lore & Background

Kait's journey begins within the Outsiders, where she wears reclaimed fabric and multipurpose attire distinct from COG society. During Gears of War 4, Kait discovers a new threat called the Swarm, which kidnaps her mother Reyna. By the game's end, she inherits an amulet that originally belonged to the Locust Queen Myrrah after being forced to euthanize her mother. In Gears 5, recurring nightmares guide her to discover that Myrrah is her grandmother and that a resurrected Reyna—transformed into the Swarm's leader—now leads a genocidal war against humanity.

Reader's Guide

Kait transitions from an Outsider in Gears 4 to a COG soldier wearing issued armor by Gears 5, though she retains elements of her heritage like her braid. Her design mixes Latino-inspired physical traits with Caucasian features to create a grounded aesthetic. Players experience her evolution as the narrative shifts to fully embrace her strengths and emotions, avoiding simple quota-based character replacements. In Gears Tactics, her father Gabriel Diaz is the protagonist, detailing his meeting with Reyna. The novels expand on her family history, with Gears of War: Ascendance set between the fourth and fifth games, while Bloodlines covers the four months leading to the siege of Riftworm Village.
