The scarlet frogfish was originally described as Chironectes coccineus by René Primevère Lesson in 1831, who reclassified it as Antennarius coccineus the same year. It has been subject to numerous taxonomic revisions, including being synonymized with Antennatus drombus in 1904, and later incorrectly named Antennarius nexilis, Antennarius stigmaticus, Antennarius leucus, Abantennarius neocaledoniensis, Antennarius moai, and Antennarius immaculatus. In 2012, DNA profiling and genetic analysis determined it was incorrectly placed in the Antennarius genus and reassigned to Antennatus coccineus. It has since remained named Antennatus coccineus from 2012 onwards. Physically, the scarlet frogfish is stocky and unstreamlined, with a scaleless body, bifurcated spinules, an upward-pointing mouth with palatal teeth, and a lure (esca) on its head. Its defining traits include a split last pelvic fin ray, a curved second dorsal fin, and an illicium much shorter than typical frogfish (8.8% of normal length). It lacks a distinctive tail base and has a faint or missing basidorsal mark. The fish exhibits Batesian mimicry, resting like a sea urchin or mimicking poisonous scorpionfish when threatened, and can inflate its body with water to deter predators.
